This learning program will introduce you to digestion, the process by which the digestive system breaks down food into usable substrates. The learning program starts where the process begins—in the mouth—and follows the path taken by food through the rest of the digestive system, including the pharynx and esophagus, the stomach, and the small and large intestines. Along the way, you will also learn about the accessory organs that aid digestion.
Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to::
Describe the intake and digestion of food in the upper GI tract.
Identify the roles of the accessory organs in digestion.
Describe the digestion and absorption of food in the intestines.
Describe the formation and expulsion of feces.
Recall the nerve systems of the GI tract.
