This learning program is designed to introduce the fundamentals of pharmacodynamics.
For many of us, the effects of the drugs we take in our daily lives can seem almost magical—we take a pill, and a half-hour later our aching knee is pain-free. But within our bodies, a cascade of complex molecular events occurs that allows drugs to act on their targets.
Pharmacodynamics studies the effects that drugs have on the body. The program begins with an overview of the major types of drug targets, which are called receptors. This program introduces the role of receptors and ligands in pharmacology. The different types of ligands, their distinct effects on receptors, and the fundamental concepts of drug response are described. A basic understanding of how drug response is measured in the clinical setting is also provided.
Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to::
List the major types of drug receptors.
Identify the types of effects drugs can have on receptors.
Recall the measurements used to quantify the dose-response relationship.
Recall the measurements used to quantify drug affinity.
Define the therapeutic window and therapeutic index.
Identify the pharmacodynamic factors that can introduce variability to drug response.
