Most, if not all, of us have already experienced what it is like to have difficulties falling asleep, to lie awake in the middle of the night, or to feel tired and drowsy during the day. But eventually we will recover after a good night’s sleep. However, when sleep problems occur regularly, they can prevent a person from effectively going on with their daily routine, and hamper their ability to function normally. At this point, it should be considered that a sleep disorder may be the underlying cause of the sleep problems.
This learning program is designed to introduce you to sleep disorders, which are of many kinds and have many different causes. The program begins with an overview of the tools used for measuring sleep, including tools for both subjective and objective evaluation of potentially abnormal patterns of sleep. You will briefly learn about the main system used to classify sleep disorders. The program concludes with a detailed description of each class of sleep disorder, and of some of the major disorders included in each class.
Upon completion of this learning program, you will be able to::
List the many beneficial effects of sleep.
Recall the factors impacting sleep and the consequences of sleep deprivation.
Describe the neurological pathways involved in wakefulness and sleep.
Identify the neurotransmitters involved in sleep.
Match the distinctive stages of sleep with their characteristic features.
